Happy Hour 4:00-7:00
Food - 8
Prices - 6
Service - 6
Total 20 out of 30
Bonus points - none. Parking is difficult in the area, the restaurant valet doesn't open until 5:00, and the atmosphere was strange. We wanted to sit at a bungalow, but those were closed for refurbishing, and the inside seating area is just okay. There were only two other parties there when we were there (4:30-6:00) and one of them was loud and obnoxious, although I didn't get the feeling that was the norm.
Best deal - the entire martini menu is $6 (not just what's listed on the happy hour menu).
Went there with a friend and we each had a martini (I had the pear ginger martini and his was dulce de leche) and both were fantastic and HUGE. I couldn't finish mine. We also had the chicken eggrolls ($5), avocado eggrolls ($5), which were both okay - a bit mushy, the mediterranean cigars ($5) which were very good, but the supposed "kobe" beef is just hamburger meat (and not a lot of it), and the calamari fritte ($8), which were great. For two of us, the total was $44 after tip.
I feel like the point total should be higher, because the food and drinks were good, but aside from the martinis, the prices weren't that discounted and the entire experience wasn't that special. Still, I imagine when the bungalows open again, this will be worth a revisit, especially in the summer. Wait until then and give this one a shot.
May 2009 -- Update
Bungalow Club sent me a note a while ago and asked me to return once the patio was re-opened. I had family in town earlier this month, so we gave it a try. In a nutshell -- the original review stands, and if anything, gets worse. Food still the same, martinis still great, but boy, oh boy did we get sticker shock when the bill came. Turns out, our waitress failed to mention that if you are on the patio, Happy Hour pricing is only for the tables -- not the bungalows (in which we were seated).
With folks from out of town, and a show to get to, I didn't feel the need to raise a stink, so paid it, but that's an absurd policy. Also, be warned, the air was excessively smoky. I am soooo hoping that LA passes the "no-smoking on outdoor patios" ban that they keep toying with, but until they do, consider Bungalow Club a smoker's haven. I honestly think the shih-tzu at the next table had a cigarette.
